SEGMENT 1:
Travel writer Jeff Greenwald tells travel
stories to Jim Fleming and explains why he thinks that since September
11th, it's more important than even that people try to understand
other lands. Greenwald's book is "Scratching the Surface:
Impressions of Planet Earth. From Hollywood to Shiraz." Also,
Ann Jones tells Steve Paulson about her trip across Africa
to meet the Lovedu people, a tribe ruled by women. Her book is
"Looking for Lovedu: Days and Nights in Africa."
SEGMENT 2:
Tony Horwitz sailed aboard a replica of Captain
James Cook's "Endeavor" and wrote "Blue Latitudes:
Boldly Going Where Captain Cook has Gone Before." Horwitz
tells Jim Fleming about the life of an 18th century sailor and
why Cook was a prodigy. Also, photographer David Plowden
talks with Anne Strainchamps about his book "Bridges: The
Spans of North America." talks about why he loves bridges
and why it was important to preserve them on film.
SEGMENT 3:
Philosopher Alain de Botton talks with Steve
Paulson about his book "The Art of Travel." De Botton
talks about celebrated artist-travelers, the sense of place and
the heightened awareness that makes travel meaningful.
