What happens when a Little League game turns into
an epic battle to save the world from an evil, shape-shifting Coyote,
and the fate of the Universe hangs on an 11-year-old boy? In this
hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, kids books for adults.
Also, remembering L. Frank Baum, the creator of the Wizard of Oz.
And a celebration of super heroes - from Spiderman to the Flash.
SEGMENT 1:
Children's book author Avi talks with Anne
Strainchamps about his Breakfast Serials project which publishes
stories for children in newspapers. And he quotes fan mail from
readers ranging from 4th grade to age 90. And we hear a bit of
the book-on-tape version of Avi reading from "Crispin: The
Cross of Lead." You can hear it again on
Avi's web site. Also, Michael Chabon wrote "Wonder
Boys," the source for the popular Michael Douglas film, and
won the Pulitzer Prize for "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier
and Klay." Now he's written a children's book, "Summerland."
He talks about it with Steve Paulson and explains why baseball
is unique and an important part of his story. And, we hear a bit
of what a Jerry Seinfeld bit of stand up for kids might sound
like.
SEGMENT 2:
Robert Weinberg writes a series of comic
books for Marvel Comics and is the co-author (with Lois Gresh)
of "The Science of Superheroes." He tells Jim Fleming
that superheroes' powers haven't kept up with the times and offers
more up-to-date explanations of how The Incredible Hulk got that
way and why Superman is so strong. And we hear a medley of Superman
songs.
SEGMENT 3:
Ben Buchanan found his way out of dyslexia
by reading Harry Potter. Then he invented a board game and wrote
a book about it - "My Year with Harry Potter." Now,
with his mother, he's written "Journey to Gameland: How to
Make a Board Game of Your Favorite Children's Book." Ben
talks with Anne Strainchamps. Also, Katharine Rogers is
the author of the biography "L. Frank Baum: Creator of Oz."
She tells Jim Fleming that there's a lot more to Oz than the Wizard,
and that Baum always loved the theater and would have been thrilled
by the Judy Garland movie.
