FOR SERENITY
To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio
Japan has a "slow life" movement. Italy
has a "slow cities" movement. Spain has a network of siesta
salons. And Americans? 10 to 15 million of us now meditate or do
yoga. Is it possible the world is finally ready to slow down? In
this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge a look at the growing
worldwide slowness movement. Also, stories of people who went searching
for serenity.
SEGMENT 1:
Carl Honore is a foreign affairs journalist
based in London and the author of "In Praise of Slowness:
How A Worldwide Movement Is Challenging the Cult of Speed."
The book is coming out later this spring. Honore tells Jim Fleming
that several countries have societies which promote a slower,
more relaxed approach to life. And we hear excerpts from the world's
fastest and slowest music. And a little bit of Bob & Ray
and the Slow Talkers of America.
SEGMENT 2:
Psychologist Tara Brach is a Buddhist meditation
teacher and author of "Radical Acceptance: Embracing Your
Life with the Heart of a Buddha." She tells Anne Strainchamps
that most people believe they're flawed and have to learn to view
themselves with compassion. Also, Elizabeth Sifton is the
author of "The Serenity Prayer: Faith and Politics in Times
of Peace and War." She's also the daughter of theologian
Reinhold Niebuhr, who wrote the famous "Serenity Prayer."
Sifton tells Steve Paulson about the history of the Serenity Prayer
and her father's social activism.
SEGMENT 3:
Piri Thomas is best known for his classic
memoir "Down These Mean Streets." Now in his mid-70's,
Thomas is still active as an educator and activist with juvenile
offenders. Thomas talks with Steve Paulson about his life and
how he turned it around. And we hear excerpts from one of his
spoken word CD's.
