It started as a joke. Danny Wallace put a small ad in a London newspaper. It simply said "Join me" and invited people to send a passport-sized photo to join Danny. The only problem was, Danny didn't know what kind of group his thousands of respondents were joining. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, the story of Danny Wallace's "Join Me" collective. Also, the terrifying true-life tale of one man's quest to pass the bar exam.

 

SEGMENT 1:

Danny Wallace is the author of Join Me. He's also the leader of a cult of the same name. Wallace tells Steve Paulson how he got the idea for his cult while visiting Switzerland, and what the attraction is of his cult which has no agenda other than existing. Also, novelist T. Coraghessan Boyle talks with Jim Fleming about his latest. Drop City is set in a California commune in the 1970s, and concerns the activities at one of America's many private little Utopias.

SEGMENT 2:

Susan Braudy is the author of Family Circle: The Boudins and the Aristocracy of the Left. The book tells the story of Kathy Boudin, daughter of famous lefty lawyer Leonard Boudin. Kathy got involved with the anti-way extremist group The Weathermen and ultimately spent 22 years in prison for her part in a robbery which resulted in the deaths of a Brinks guard and two policemen. Braudy says Kathy was motivated by rivalry with her father. Also, Brad Land tells Anne Strainchamps about his terrifying experiences being kidnaped, then pledging a fraternity. He's the author of Goat: A Memoir.

SEGMENT 3:

Alex Wellen is the author of Barman: Ping-Pong, Pathos and Passing the Bar. The book chronicles Wellen's experiences at law school and his showdown with the dreaded New York bar exam. He talks with Anne Strainchamps.
