EAST MEETS WEST PART TWO:
DHARMA DAYS, YOGA NIGHTS

Program 07-11-11-A

Listen!

A look at America's romance with Eastern spirituality: how did dharma retreats and yoga vacations become part of the Western lifestyle? Buddhist teachers explain what Buddhism has to offer a consumer culture. Also, hear how the Beatles brought Eastern spirituality ot the West.

SEGMENT 1:

Elizabeth Gilbert, author of "Eat, Pray, Love" tells Steve Paulson it was an early mid-life crisis (including a messy divorce) that brought her to India to follow in the footsteps of generations of spiritual seekers from the West. Also, Bob Spitz writes about the Beatles time in India with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in his book "The Beatles: The Biography." Spitz tells Anne Strainchamps that the ashram was a blissful environment for the Beatles and changed their music and our popular culture forever.

SEGMENT 2:

Jim Fleming reports how a new generation of American Buddhist teachers are adapting the Buddha's two thousand year old message for 21st century American audiences. We hear from Lama Surya Das, born Jeffrey Miller in New York; Sharon Salzberg; Buddhist psychotherapist Tara Brach and Jon Kabat-Zinn.

SEGMENT 3:

Robert Bly has re-translated some of the work of a fifteenth century poet-saint from India named Kabir. Bly tells Steve Paulson that Kabir often writes about the soul's longing for the divine. And we hear examples of the poetry.
