Andrew Weil is one of the most influential voices in alternative medicine today.  He’s credited with establishing the field of integrative medicine and is the author of several best-selling books.  In his latest, “Spontaneous Happiness,” Weil talks about living a life that promotes happiness and peace of mind.  It’s a compassionate recipe for personal well being without the pressure to be happy all the time.  Weil tells Steve Paulson that he's dubious about the prevelance of medically managed depression.

Are his references to "secular spirituality", compassion, etc. from a new book he's written?

Secular spirituality is discussed in "Spontaneous Compassion." It's a reference aspect of the non-physical self without religious overlays.

As I listened to the interview, it was interesting to me on many levels. Many are quick to assume that medicines are the only answer. Many people, doctors as well as patients, are unwilling to dig deeper into the many triggers of depression, and certainly underestimate the contributions to the depressed state such as a nutrient poor diet, lack of anti-inflammatory Omega 3 fatty acids, a low vitamin D, and lack of exercise, as mentioned in the interview, which are so prevalent today. There are many people who would be dramatically better off, if only they knew what a difference even these few things could make, just for starters. I look forward to reading the rest of the book. Thank you for forward thinkers like Dr. Weil.
