Gretchen Reynolds on Exercise Science
07.30.2012
Most of us want to exercise smart, to get the most bang for our buck in the least amount of time. Gretchen Reynolds writes the Phys Ed column for the New York Times which appears in the Well blog online and in the "Science Times" print section. She’s compiled the latest in exercise science into the book “The First 20 Minutes" to help keep our work-outs working.

Sweet Spot of Running
Gretchen said that the ideal would be 4, maybe 5 times a week, 3 miles at a time, of 10-11 mile per hour pace?! Is that accurate? My husband is a runner (ran in high school and in college) and he told me that most ELITE athletes would run 6:45-7:30 minute mile pacing during training for easy runs, just a few could/would keep a faster pace than that. Did she misquote the actual miles per hour pace you would have to run? That pace is truly unattainable for most people.
Sweet Spot
I looked up her actual NY Times article, and she did misquote the pace--the actual recommended pace for that amount of running is 10-11 MINUTES per mile. If anyone is interested.
Sweet Spot
Thanks for looking that up, I was hoping the time she said was incorrect, because I'd never hit that pace!
Sitting is killing us
Loved her discussion of breaking up your sedentary day in the office. Instant Recess is a a fun program to implement at work - short (5-10 min) activity breaks. http://recess.keenfootwear.com/recess-at-work/
