Jennifer Homans on "Apollo's Angels"

April 17, 2011

Ballet is performed all over the world, but in Russia ballet is the route to stardom.  Jennifer Homans wrote the first definitive history of ballet, called "Apollo's Angels."  She tells Anne Strainchamps what makes "The Nutracker" one of the world's most popular ballets.

The world would not know Igor Stravinsky's music if it were not for ballet. His "Rite of Spring" caused riots in the opera house in Paris when it was first performed. His other ballets are still performed without dance accompaniment by many symphonic orchestras.
