It’s 1994.  Eight scientists—four men and four women—have been selected to be part of a grand experiment focusing on the future of humanity.  Their new home is a glass enclosure called E2, somewhere in the wilds of the Arizona desert. E2 is a prototype of a possible off-earth colony. It’s got five biomes –rainforest, savanna, desert, ocean and marsh – so it sounds pretty nice. The only catch is that they have to stay in this structure for two whole years.

That’s the premise behind acclaimed novelist T.C. Boyle’s new book, “The Terranauts,” which was inspired by the actual Biosphere 2 experiments during the 1990s. Doug Gordon sat down to talk with him.
