U Sam Oeur and Ken McCullough on Cambodian Poetry

Crossing Three Wildernesses

U Sam Oeur is a Cambodian poet who was imprisoned by the Khmer Rouge. He lives in Texas now and visited Madison with his translator, Ken McCullough. They talk with Steve Paulson and recite some of Sam’s poems.

Listeners should be aware that one of the poems talks about the brutality of the Khmer Rouge and details how they strangled the poet’s new born babies in the internment camp. It is an emotionally harrowing poem.
