How does a piece of fake news spread over a social network like Twitter? According to computer scientist Filippo Menczer, the answer is pretty simple: between 9 and 15% of Twitter accounts are "bots," programs designed to puppeteer Twitter accounts that repeatedly post links to inflammatory and often misleading content.

The objective? Get that content in front of Twitter's most prominent users by any means necessary, with the hope of spreading it to their massive following. By Menczer's observation, that includes the president of the United States.
