Here at the TTBOOK office, I’ve been building a nest. It started with a ceramic owl, which inspired the peacock themed rug and the crane wallpaper. Almost unintentionally, I’ve made the office bird themed. You might say I have a secret avian obsession, the subject of this week’s episode. Nest-building is a fascinating behavior of birds. It’s long been thought that nest building was an instinctual behavior but it turns out that birds learn to build their nests and improve over time. In other words, even for birds, practice makes perfect. I’m thinking a lot about that recently as we move through spring, a season about change and new beginning.
Also, I was recently introduced to the Merlin app, created by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It’s basically Shazam for identifying birds. It listens to bird songs and calls and can identify multiple species in real time using AI. As an audio producer, I love seeing the bird calls in the waveforms. I highly recommend downloading it for your next walk.
