FRANCESCO SBANO, born in 1963, was born in the small Calabrian village of Paola. From childhood on, he experienced firsthand how deeply the ’ndrangheta is enmeshed in the everyday life of Calabria. After his photographic career brought him to Germany, he began studying the culture of the Mafia during the late 1990s. This resulted in the CD series “La Musica della Mafia”, whose third and last part, “Le Canzoni dell' Onorata Società”, is also the film’s soundtrack. Sbano has published several photo reports on the subject and also co-authored articles published in Le Monde, Le Nouvelle Observateur, The New York Times, The Times Magazine, The Guardian, Newsweek, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin.
