This one is a writer and editor. My short stories have been published in magazines and anthologies -- Eclipse One, Wired, Hayakawa’s Sf Magazine, Nature, Asimov’s Magazine, and others around the world. I'm the publisher and editor of The Infinite Matrix.

My fiction has received the Nebula award in the United States and the Sense of Gender award in Japan, and has been nominated for the Hugo, Philip K. Dick, and World Fantasy awards, and shortlisted for the James Tiptree. Jr. award.

I also have an extensive background in high-tech advertising, and I know more about the last forty years of computer marketing than is considered polite or reasonable. In the mid-1980s, I was Director of Advertising and Sales Promotion at Microsoft Corporation. More recently, I was Director of Marketing at Global Automation in Mountain View. I'm a former managing editor of Gorp, the pioneering outdoor recreation website, and one of my personal websites, the Difference Dictionary, was declared Cool Site of the Day, back when the Internet had so few sites you could prioritize them.

For twenty years I’ve been on the board of directors of the Clarion West Writers Workshop, which numbers among its graduates a significant number of the SF/fantasy field’s writers and editors. I’m a 1976 graduate of its sister workshop, Clarion.

Originally from the Boston area, I’ve lived recently in New York and San Francisco, and am a long-time resident of Seattle. I am at work on a biography of Avram Davidson, one of the great American fantastists of the twentieth century.
