We have some exciting news! To The Best Of Our Knowledge’s episode “The Spirit of Jim Thorpe” has won First Place, Radio/Podcast – Best Feature Story in the 2024 Indigenous Media Awards. The honor was awarded by the Indigenous Journalists Association.
Jim Thorpe, a member of the Sac and Fox Nation, was one of the world’s greatest athletes — a legend in the NFL, MLB, NCAA, and in the Olympics. He was also subjected to unrelenting racism, stripped of his Olympic models, and later, during his funeral, his body was actually stolen and sold to a town in Pennsylvania (where it still is).
In recounting this remarkable story, our TTBOOK episode told a larger story about Indigenous history. Today, Jim Thorpe is being celebrated by a new generation of Native Americans. And I, for one, now have Jim Thorpe as one of my greatest American heroes.
