I’m still listening to the first music I ever heard.

Craig Taborn

Jazz. An art form that for me, never gets old. My dad was working as a professional jazz musician when I was born, playing gigs in Greenwich Village while working on his PhD in musicology. Adding a baby to the mix was too much — he left performing behind so long ago that I don’t remember the sound of his horn. But he never stopped listening to and following jazz. Now in his mid-80s, he listens to music seriously for several hours a day and is always discovering new voices.

Thanks to him, my life is filled with music. It’s a rare weekend that Steve and I aren’t listening to something he sent. Miguel Zenon has been on heavy rotation recently, along with Anouar Brahem’s latest. One of our Sunday morning favorites is Craig Taborn, whose piano improvisation is so subtle and meditative, it can induce a kind of trance state. Nicknamed “the Ghost” by musician friends, Taborn keeps a notoriously low profile. It took some work, but Steve realized a dream recently when he agreed to an interview. This weekend, we’re delighted to introduce you to "one of the greatest living jazz pianists."
