Al and Helen Hinkle were life-long friends of the founding members of The Beats - Jack Kerouac, Neal and Carolyn Cassady, Allen Ginsberg - and they were immortalized in Kerouac's novel, On The Road, as Big Ed and Galatea Dunkel. Helen died in 1994.
