Dr. Hirsch has conducted and published more than 180 research studies on the effects of smell and taste on human emotion, mood, behavior, diseases states, consumer preferences and weight loss, among other topics. His studies have been published in numerous medical journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Chemical Senses, American Journal of Psychiatry, Psychiatric Times, International Journal of Obesity, Neurology, Journal of Neurologic Rehabilitation and Psychosomatic Medicine.
A sought-after speaker on the subject of sensory phenomena and disorders, he lectures frequently across the country. He has guest appearances on television programs such as CNN, the CBS Early Show and Good Morning America, and his research has been cited in major publications including Time and the New York Times.
After receiving his M.D. in 1979 at the University of Michigan, Dr. Hirsch completed his residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago as a member of both the neurology and psychiatry departments. He previously served as Clinical Assistant Professor of the Department of Neurology at the University of Illinois.
Dr. Hirsch holds five certifications from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, as well as a certification from the American Board of Medical Examiners. He is a professional member of medical societies, including the American Academy of Neurology, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association and more. Among his awards and appointments, Dr. Hirsch has served as Honorary Chairman of the Physicians' Advisory Board to The National Republican Congressional Committee and has received the prestigious Peter Bassoe Award from The Chicago Neurological Society.
