John Dalby

Captain John Dalby has represented The MRM Group since it’s founding in 1986. He served for twenty years at sea aboard dry cargo vessels, and, for the most part, on oil and chemical tankers with major shipping lines including Shell and Mærsk Line - latterly in command of Products Carriers.

He is a Consultant to Lloyd’s of London, the Institute of London Underwriters and to US Underwriters with regard to bulk cargoes (liquid and dry) and to vessels. He was a UK government approved MARPOL surveyor and a recognised expert in shipping operations, risk management and loss control and fraud prevention in relation to oil and chemical, bulk grain and fertiliser cargoes.

John established the MRM Group’s “MARAP” (Maritime Asset Recovery and Protection – establishing his international reputation as the “repo-man“!) service some 9 years ago and, in 1998, their Anti-Piracy Rapid Response Force. He was also instrumental in the development of MRM’s unique, covert satellite tracking system – ShipTrac

Over the last 5 years, John has spoken at numerous International Ship Finance Conferences in New York, London, Paris & Monte Carlo, focussing on the problems associated with defaulting ship loans and is an acknowledged expert in that field. In December 1999, he also addressed the Parliamentary Maritime Group at the House of Lords on the subject of piracy and it’s growth – specifically but not limited to South East Asia.

He has also appeared extensively on UK TV, BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service, in addition to BBC Local radio stations and in the National and International Press. More interestingly, he was featured in an extensive and authoritative 8-page treatment in the New York Times Sunday Magazine in August 2000. This led to numerous offers from film and TV production companies in both Europe and the United States.

A fully qualified multi-engine jet pilot and a passable marksman (0.22 and 0.357/0.38 Special rifles, 9 mm pistols and crossbow).
