Laura Sessions Stepp, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist for The Washington Post, has written for 15 years about the lives, legends and culture of youth. She first drew national attention with her critically acclaimed book about middle school children entitled Our Last Best Shot: Guiding Our Children Through Early Adolescence. She garnered even more attention for her second book about young women in high school and college, Unhooked: How Young Women Pursue Sex, Delay Love and Lose at Both.
Unhooked follows three groups of real young women during an academic year. It examines hooking up – the casually sexual culture that has replaced dating – and shows how it has affected the thoughts, behaviors, and aspirations of this generation of girls, including those who want no part of it. The book, like her articles in the Post, has shocked parents and persuaded adolescents that someone understands them. She has made the unspeakable speakable, and changed the way that generations can talk with each other.
