Mark Clanton

Dr. Clanton serves as the Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society’s High Plains Division (Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Hawaii) and deputy chief medical officer for special projects (International Cancer Control and Access to Care in the United States) for the National American Cancer Society in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Mark Clanton served the director of the United States National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, as deputy director from 2004 to 2006.  His NCI leadership portfolio included NCI’s offices, centers and divisions focused on cancer prevention, cancer control, international cancer control, and health services research.

In 2006 Dr. Clanton led the United States Delegation to the International Agency for Cancer Research in Lyon, France (IARC). In 2004, the World Health Organization Director General Lee Jong-wook appointed Dr. Clanton to the WHO’s Cancer Technical Group, the body charged with writing the first Global Cancer Control Plan.

Dr. Clanton received the National Institute of Health Directors Award of Merit and the Secretary of Health and Human Services Distinguished Service Award in both 2005 and 2006. In March 2010 Dr. Clanton was appointed by the commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to serve as a voting member of the new Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee.

Dr. Clanton is the former chief medical officer and vice president of Pharmacy Programs of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. Dr. Clanton received his undergraduate degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C., his medical degree from Tulane University Medical School in New Orleans, Louisiana and his Pediatric training at Baylor Pediatric Residency Program in Houston, Texas.  Dr. Clanton received his Masters degree in Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy and Managed from the Harvard University School of Public Health and he currently serves as President of the Harvard School of Public Health Alumni Council.
