I’ve been a writer and editor for almost twenty years. My first job was Assistant Literary Editor at The New Republic. From there, I went on to write for the New York Times Magazine, inaugurating the “Questions For” feature among other things (you can see some of my interviews and other NYT mag pieces on the “Publications” page). After many years of freelancing for numerous magazines and newspapers, I switched to books and have now written two and am working on my third.
I wrote most of the first one, GIRL SLEUTH: NANCY DREW AND THE WOMEN WHO CREATED HER, during a fellowship at the fantastic Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library. It was published in 2005, won an Edgar Award and was named a Best Book of the Year by the Chicago Tribune. The second one, EATING FOR BEGINNERS: AN EDUCATION IN THE PLEASURES OF FOOD FROM CHEFS, FARMERS AND ONE PICKY KID, was published in 2010 and will be out in paperback this August.
