Nils Christie (b. 24th of February 1928) is professor emeriti in Criminology.
Christie took the magister degree in Sociology in1953, and became doctor philos in 1960 with a dissertation entitled "Young Norwegian Offenders". In 1966 Nils Christie was the first in Norway to be appointed to the position of professor in Criminology.
He was for many years the Head of the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law. He has written 15 books – most of which has been translated to a number of languages (Swedish, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Portugese, Spansh etc) – as well as a great number of articles. He has been – and still is – an active participant in public discourse on matters regarding crime and punishment.
