Tom Lessl came to the University of Georgia in 1985 after completing his dissertation at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1989-1990 he taught at the University of Wisconsin as a visiting professor. His research examines the public culture of science, the various symbolic creations that bring the character and significance of scientific inquiry into more general awareness. The specific aim of this research is to understand how such creations of public culture sustain scientific patronage. He also writes about the theory and practice of religious communication, especially as its traditions and patterns infiltrate secular rhetoric.
