Traveling With (Ethical) Baggage.

Through the doorway

This week’s show is all about the ethical choices we face when we decide to venture elsewhere. The last time I traveled abroad was actually the start of my journey with the TTBOOK team. I was in the Philippines visiting family when Charles Monroe-Kane called to offer me the job.

To be honest with you, I accepted with a strange mix of emotions. On the one hand, I felt so happy to land my first job out of college, not to mention in the field that I studied. On the other, I felt guilty for getting an opportunity I knew that my cousins did not have.

I’ve been thinking a lot about our interview with Anu Taranath and her book “Beyond Guilt Trips: Mindful Travel in an Unequal World.” Anu asks, what does it mean to have more in a place that has less? But beyond that, what does it mean when you also call that place home? It’s something I still need to grapple with and unpack. And I’m notoriously bad at unpacking after a trip.

I hope you have safe travels this Memorial Day weekend! If you feel so inclined, we have the perfect thing for your listening queue.
