Why I (Don’t) Feel Bad About My Voice

I’m always surprised by how many people say they don’t like the sound of their own voice. Surprised, because I thought it was just me.

When I first started hosting "To The Best Of Our Knowledge," the term “vocal fry” had just entered the mediasphere and I was suddenly, painfully aware of every scratchy, creaky, gravel-y sound that emerged from my throat. In this week’s show, I re-tell the story of how I attempted at first to tame but ultimately to accept my voice — and in the process, discovered just how repressed, criticized, and politicized many voices are.

It’s past time to welcome them all — to podcasts, radio waves, and halls of power. Listen, and be heard.
