Not long ago, we thought decoding the human genome would reveal the secrets of life - or at least a road map for understanding who we are. That proved to be a fantasy. New discoveries are uncovering a far more nuanced picture of how cells develop. Scientists are also learning how to grow life outside the body - and as science writer Phil Ball reports, even create mini-brains in a vat.
